Many Sign SIZES for Public Square Outreach

I’ll be writing mostly about signs to hold in outreach events on the streets. The material of choice is corrugated plastic used in typical yard signs. Heavy paper and poster material are too flimsy for holding. Vinyl is also flexible. Vinyl signs are the material of choice for large signs you can attach to a structure with zip ties or stretch cords. They are great for pedestrian overpass outreach, where they can be attached to fence mesh. Now, on to corrugated plastic.

The typical size for yard signs is 24” wide and 18” high. This is a size that can be used with metal stakes. Two other sign sizes that can be used with metal stakes are 24” x 24” and 24” x 12”. At times, you may want more on a sign than is effective for the regular size. If the regular yard sign size wastes space, try 24’x12”. Pro-Life Waco is using many 24” x 24” signs in Walgreens and CVS protests.

Some outreach initiatives call for signs larger than 24” x 24”.

As background for considering “jumbo” yard signs, you should know about a new sign-making technology that has become prominent in recent years. This is printing signs on 48” x 96” corrugated plastic sheets and then cutting the signs to size after printing. The signs are in full color, can present images along with text, and can have different messages on the front and back.

With printing on 48” x 96” corrugated plastic sheets, standard yard signs can be printed ten to a sheet. (Do the math.) This is the way Pro-Life in the Public Square is printing signs for our Yard Signs for Life support campaign for local pro-life groups and churches. And 24” x 12” signs can be printed sixteen to a full sheet. I hope this is clear.

Bigger signs can be effective when you are far from traffic in outreach
or if you have a lot of content for a sign message. A great message is not
valuable if it can’t be read easily. Pro-Life Waco has used signs that are
48” x 48”, 48”x 32”, 48’ x 24”, 32” x 32”, and 32” x 16”.

In closing, you have two basic choices for metal stakes to hold yard
signs. One category is made of rather light aluminum. The other is made
of much heavier metal. The former can be purchased for around $1 a stake.
The latter choice is over $2 a stake. Pro-Life Waco uses heavier stakes. These will hold the yard sign upright for a long period. And the stakes are much more resistant to breaking because of heavy wind or being hammered into hard soil.

I hope this essay on an “exciting” topic will help your hometown Public Square Outreach.
